The Before Time

This collection of stories explore the extraordinary and often overlooked presence of animals at pivotal moments in human history. From the hare released at the start of a battle by Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni tribe, as she led a rebellion against the Roman Empire in AD 60 to the Falcon associated with the sun god Horus and the divine kingship it had with Pharaoh's in ancient Egypt.

Each illustration spotlights a different animal’s role at a significant historical event, revealing how their lives became entwined with moments of triumph, tragedy, and change.

Designed in a contemporary visual style, each story is presented in the language of the specific historical time while the graphic shows elements of data visualisations to provide context and insight into the eras depicted.
