CASTLE CAMPBELL
Castle Campbell stands in solemn and lofty isolation above Dollar Glen, overlooked by a crescent of the Ochil Hills from which it is divided by a precipitous ravine on each side.
At the bottom of these ravines the rushing waters of the Burn of Care and the Burn of Sorrow can be glimpsed through deep fissures in the rock.
To the south, a gap in the Ochil Hills reveals a magnificent view over the town of Dollar and across the Forth valley to the distant Pentland Hills
Castle Campbell was the chief Lowland stronghold of the senior branch of the powerful Campbell clan, who down the years became earls, marquises and dukes of Argyll.
The Campbell clan were seldom far from the major political and religious events of 15th, 16th and 17th century Scotland.
In 1489 the place was renamed Castle Campbell, and the family continued to occupy the residence until it was burnt down in 1654.
